'THE GAMBLE'
*TWO REGENCY RUNAWAYS RACE ACROSS ENGLAND*
High-stakes gambler Allan Rutledge backs the wrong horse at Epsom and has to take the shabby mail coach back to London. At the next stop, he encounters an uncommonly pretty girl, traveling alone. Allan helps her aboard, engages her in conversation and is amused by her attitudes.
Marissa Barrington, anxious and uncertain, reveals she has taken a huge gamble and run away from home to escape an unwanted suitor, the Duke of Ludlow. She hopes to take refuge with an aunt, but in London, the aunt cannot be found.
Allan receives startling news, the Duke threatens, and he and Marissa begin a harried journey across the countryside to evade him. Romance develops, but can either of them take the risk?

In a deft move, a skill Allan had long ago mastered, he swept her into his arms and soundly kissed her pouty lips. A jolt went through him like a blow to the back of his neck. He momentarily lost what his intention had been, fell into Marissa like a burning log into a grate, and with the same degree of heat.
They parted, and gazed at one another.
“See how you are,” she mumbled. “A scoundrel and a rakehell.”
He brushed off his waistcoat. “And you are a lovely, desirable girl who needed kissing. I cannot apologize, it felt too wonderful.”
“Then make it last as a fond memory,” she hissed, “because it will never happen again.”
That is what you think, Allan confided to himself.
